Holidays Holidays Holidays!

I knew that Christmas is almost here when I walked into Target yesterday and my daughter yelled "Mama...TREES!!!" All of the decorated trees were up and music was playing. I personally love Christmas and the surrounding holidays, so it got me in the mood.

Now, have you thought about your holiday cards? As you can see below, I have a few choice. I also am partnering with a fantastic card designer here in Arlington that is offering some great choices and will do custom work also. Tara of TLC by Tara has some great samples on her site. She is great and very easy to work with! Please take a minute and peruse her work, if not for holiday cards, then for all of the other things she designs!!

The question I am always asked..."How do you find great stuff on Etsy?"

I am asked this question more and more and I want to give you what works for me. Etsy can be overwhelming because there are SO many talented designer/artists on the site.

So lets break it down, let me begin with one area, toddler clothes. I am constantly looking for baby/toddler clothes for photoshoots (and let's be honest, my own children!) When looking for a funky design of fabric, I add the designer name in the search engine, ie Amy Butler, Denyse Schmidt or Michael Miller. If a seller on Etsy uses one of these fabrics, they typically work with the others. Once I am in their store, I might look at that sellers favorites, other buyers/sellers that like that shop etc etc. It is all about looking for the "work around".

The next place to look is on the home page on the far left. Click on "Time Machine 2" This will list what has recently sold, a great place to view what others are buying. I get great ideas on all types of listings from clothing to home goods.

Finally, if you want something, I would be shocked if someone didn't make it on Etsy. Honestly, try, look it up...you most likely will be pleasantly surprised.

The artists on Etsy are fantastic to work with, way better than your favorite store. Can you imagine going into the Gap and seeing a pair of jeans that are almost perfect, but you really wish the leg was a little wider or the waist just a little higher? Those are the types of changes someone on Etsy would make for you. You just "convo" the seller (etsy speak) and ask them to make the changes.

Location Location Location....

I just returned from visiting my home state and took some fun photos of my daughter and niece. I looked for some very industrial type locations and we had so much fun! The girls were very playful, they looked great in their tutus on the railroad tracks.

When scheduling your photoshoot, begin thinking of some favorite images you might have seen and we will come up with some great ideas during your pre-shoot consultation.

Happy Birthday to ....

me! Well, to Jennifer Burns Photography! I cannot believe a year has gone by since I have been in business (officially)! So to celebrate, I would like to pass the love on to my loyal clients!

If you have already had a session with me (thank you!) I would like to offer you a special thanks....
Send me two new clients (whom I have never had a session with) and I will do your next session at half the cost! Call it Christmas in July.... I do need to put a time stamp on this, so the new clients must be booked by the end of the year. Once the new clients have had their new sessions, I will put you on the books! Of course, you can choose whichever package works best for you! I look forward to meeting your friends and taking pictures of you and your family again.

Thanks to you all!

Scrapbooking: Once dreaded...now, no longer!

I can't tell you how much money I have spent on scrapbooking papers, embellishments, photos reproductions, etc etc. Since I now have a toddler, bringing all of that out to finish her scrapbook is simply not an option. I have been looking for a "digital" solution for the past year and I am pretty picky. I wanted single pages, not a bound book and I wanted page layout choices. Reason that I don't like the bound book option (ie shutterfly and kodak) was because I would have it all completed and forget some great series of photos! Now Shutterfly came out with some options that met most of my criteria, but they were still kind of blah...so I kept looking. Then I found an answer.

Not sure how I found this site, but I am thrilled that I did! How Fast They Grow met all of my scrapbooking desires and it was so easy! So all of you out there that loathe scrapbooking, you now have no excuses to make your little one the all-important memory book. Face it, your kids will love it and it will be important to them. I knocked out her book in about a week...all during the beloved naptime.

Now keep in mind that my photo sessions and How Fast They Grow will work perfectly together since I give you a CD of all of the images with the main package!

So get scrapbooking, your child will thank you and love you for it! Here are some examples of what I pulled together while my little ones were sleeping.

Capturing those precious moments.....

There isn't anything much better than a baby fresh from the bath. Yesterday, I had both kids clean and laying around in their diapers and I grabbed my camera. I had just enough light coming in to my cave like bedroom and used every ounce that I could get. Encouraging my clients to have their kids not "perfectly coiffed" for a photoshoot is my message. Know that we can start a session right after a bath or whenever they are happiest. Just letting the day take its course and letting go of any visions you might have, we will capture really beautiful pictures no matter what....

Fall? Already?

I know, Summer really just began, however Fall will be here before you know it! I promise you, it will. Scheduling your photo shoot now for Fall, will be the best way to ensure you have a spot during this busy time of year. Due to bookings made in the last month I encourage those who wish to capture the beauty of their children in Autumn to book early.

As you know I always work with clients if you have a cranky baby or fussy toddler the day your shoot roles around. I took the above picture mid - October last year. The below picture I took mid November, so that really will be the best time to have those great Fall leaves for your children to play in. There are so many places to go that will inspire wonderment in your children. Fall foliage help to create the perfect holiday card photo!

Playtime

I have begun scheduling photo shoots at parks and playgrounds to truly capture children at their best...when playing. We have some great parks around here that have both water play areas and standard playground equipment. This allows us to capture some really fun photos. If you want to use your backyard, think about having the sprinkler set up...water adds so much to a child's expression. Above is a photo showing just that. Don't feel you have to have them in a swimming suit either! I have encouraged Ella to run in the sprinker in her regular clothes...it has created some very fun expressions!

Every little girl loves dress up....

I have decided to add "props" to my photo sessions. Nothing too over the top, just a few of the pettiskirts for dress up and little items I have found along the way (cool baby hats, vintage blocks, cashmere shorts to cover up baby's diaper, bubbles etc...) I would love any suggestions from anyone. After taking photos of those little girls in those skirts, I realized just how every girl loves to twirl around. My daughter is more of a tomboy, but still loves it!

Princess fun

I just got these pettiskirts from the same website I found the tutu on
www.fancythat1.etsy.com ! These little girls loved playing "princess" in
these skirts. You can order almost any color you want and they are very well
made with adjustable waists!

My birth announcements

I know a fantastic graphic artist who just finished custom designing my son's birth announcements. They are beautiful! I highly recommend her for announcements, cards etc.
You can find additional samples at www.indovinadesign.com

I have returned

I recently took some time off from my photography to have a baby! We welcomed sweet Benjamin Hollis on April 30. I am now back in my element and have 4 photo shoots scheduled. I did a newborn photo shoot last week and loved being back. There is nothing sweeter than a newborn baby, so tiny! The below photo is from that session.

I am wanting to add different elements to my photo sessions and have found some fun pieces off off www.etsy.com. My favorites are these great wraps for newborns from www.tonsyn.etsy.com. She doesn't have them posted, but will knit one upon request:

My other favorite store on etsy is www.fancythat1.etsy.com She makes adorable tutus among other things. I took a picture of my daughter in her tutu from there. I also plan on doing a princess photo special bringing along a few tutus and petticoats for the little girls to wear!
